WHAT IS MEDICAL CANNABIS?

Cannabis preparations containing pharmaceutically active substances are termed medical cannabis.

These are products that contain a portion of the cannabis plant, or active ingredients extracted from the cannabis plant, or synthetic cannabinoids, that are used for medicinal purposes.

Medical cannabis

The term medical cannabis refers to cannabis preparations for medical and pharmaceutical purposes. These can be broken down as follows:

Cannabis for medical purposes

Cannabis for medical purposes refers to herbal or plant-derived cannabis compositions used to treat certain symptoms or diseases (e.g., epilepsy, pain, or multiple sclerosis (MS)). Cannabis for medicinal purposes means the use of the whole unprocessed plant, the processed plant or the compounds contained therein. It may include preparations with high CBD and low THC, high THC and low CBD, and cannabinoids in other proportions. CBD products are also available as consumer items, such as dietary supplements. Cannabis preparations for medicinal purposes are currently made in the form of herbal substances (flowers, buds), oils, tinctures, edible products and capsules.

Pharmaceutical Cannabis - Cannabis Medicine

The cannabis drug refers to products made using pure cannabinoids (either plant extracts or synthetics) that have undergone full clinical trials and are authorized as medicines. Examples of such products are Sativex, Epidiolex, Cesamet, Marinol and Syndros.

Recreational cannabis

Recreational cannabis refers to any cannabis that is not used for medical purposes, including black market products. The concentration of THC, a psychotropic drug found in the cannabis plant, is usually higher. It is illegal in many countries and states, including Hungary. Recreational cannabis is usually smoked by people (with or without tobacco) or used in the form of oils, vaporized products (and more and more people consume cannabis in the form of food or beverages).

THC

The main psychotropic component of the cannabis plant is THC, which stands for tetrahydrocannabinol. This is the primary drug that causes the mind-altering effect, also known as “tearing,” that can be linked to the recreational use of cannabis. Research shows that THC can be used to treat the side effects of chemotherapy (nausea and vomiting), multiple sclerosis, HIV / AIDS, spinal cord injuries, chronic pain, inflammation, and digestive problems.

CBD

Cannabidiol, abbreviated CBD, is a non-consciousness-modifying component of cannabis. It is also found in industrial hemp as well as medical cannabis. According to some research, it has a wide range of health benefits, few side effects, and a low risk of addiction or abuse. Its antiepileptic and antipsychotic effects have been demonstrated in clinical trials, but it is widely used by consumers to treat skin diseases, arthritis, pain, anxiety, and other ailments, among others.

Hemp

Definition of varieties of hemp or industrial hemp registered in the catalog of varieties of Cannabis sativa which are grown for industrial and commercial use. Hemp inflorescence is also used to extract cannabinoids. The THC level of industrial hemp is generally very low - in European countries a maximum level of between 0.2% and 0.3% is allowed, the CBD content is usually between 1-5%.
