Evidence that CBD may reduce cytokine storm and inflammation in COVID-19

A new study revealed early evidence that CBD may help reduce cytokine storms and excessive pneumonia in patients with COVID-19.

Carried out by researchers at the Dental College of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, the study shows that CBD can help patients with COVID-19 who show signs of respiratory distress to avoid extreme interventions such as mechanical ventilation as well as death and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Researchers say clinical trials are needed to determine the optimal dose and timing before CBD becomes part of COVID-19 treatment.

ARDS in COVID-19

Researchers ’studies have shown that pure CBD can help the lungs recover from an overwhelming inflammation or“ cytokine storm ”caused by the COVID-19 virus, and can help restore the body’s healthier oxygen levels.

Dr. Babak Baban, interim dean of immunologist and DCG research, and the corresponding author of a study in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, said 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and we urgently need better intervention and treatment strategies. "

The researchers ’findings were made possible by finding a safe model to replicate ARDS-induced lung damage.

The model produced classic symptoms of ARDS, and then CBD significantly reduced classical indicators of excess, such as pro-inflammatory cytokines, by improving blood oxygen levels and allowing the lung to undergo structural damage.

Lung function in COVID-19

Cytokine storms affect cell communication and can promote and deter inflammation. COVID-19 produces over-inflammatory molecules such as the interleukins IL-6 and IL-1β, as well as immune cells such as neutrophils and monocytes.
In order to test the effectiveness of CBD for these storms, the researchers examined objective indicators of lung function in mice, such as levels of inflammatory cytokines, blood oxygen levels before and after treatment, and temperature, which is an indicator of inflammation. Oxygen levels increased while temperature and cytokine levels decreased with CBD therapy.

The researchers said that the clinical symptoms and physical lung changes caused by ARDS were also reversed with CBD treatment. CBD rapidly improved the clinical symptoms of mouse models, and later detailed examination of the lungs revealed damage to their structure, such as tissue overgrowth, scarring, and swelling also completely or partially resolved.

The researchers ’next steps include conducting similar studies on other organs affected by COVID-19, including the gut, heart, and brain.
