How does CBD affect cerebral blood supply?

Even a single dose of cannabidiol helps the blood supply to the brain, researchers at the University of College London have observed in young, healthy subjects. The results may contribute to the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The research was published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. The researchers looked at fifteen healthy young adults who had not used cannabis before. In the one-week experiment, one half of the group received a capsule containing six hundred milligrams of CBD and the other half received a placebo. After seven days, they changed roles, so they received a placebo who had previously had CBD and vice versa. Participants did not know when to take which capsule. Following administration, subjects underwent special brain imaging (MRI) to monitor changes in blood oxygen levels. Based on the results, CBD significantly increased the blood supply to the hippocampus and the so-called orbitofrontal cortex. “To our knowledge, this is the first study to find that CBD increases blood supply in key areas of memory processing, specifically in the hippocampus. This supports the view that CBD has a region-specific effect on blood flow in the human brain, which has been previously debated, ”said Dr. Michael Bloomfield, lead researcher at the study.

Affected areas have a role in memory functioning and decision making. Researchers believe the discovery could contribute to the treatment of memory-related disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and PTSD. The amount of CBD used in the experiment is relatively high, so daily administration at such a dose would be quite expensive. Due to the “social effect” phenomenon, CBD is more effective together with other cannabinoids, so it can be assumed that the effect can be achieved with a smaller amount by using a full-spectrum CBD oil.
